VIPRE Antivirus + Antispyware is a new, built-from-scratch antivirus and antispyware product, by Sunbelt Software. The antivirus engine is Sunbelt's own creation, not licensed from another company. VIPRE is a combination antivirus, antispyware, anti-rootkit and other technologies into a seamless, tightly-integrated product. The name, VIPRE (Virus Intrusion Protection Remediation Engine) is a  antivirus and antispyware software in-one that protects the user's PC against more highly complex malware threats including viruses, adware, spyware and rootkits, without hogging the PC's resources like many traditional antivirus products.

According to Sunbelt, it is a very fast and very tight on resources. One of the reasons they decided to "build our own" was because of the enormous performance penalty of cobbling together an antivirus and antispyware engine together. It is one of the fastest products of its class. The definition database structure is also completely different than the current version of CounterSpy. It is considerably smaller and more efficient.
